O.R./Analytics at Work Blog
Opening day, the Final Four, The 2011 Cricket World Cup, soccer, golf, basketball, NASCAR, and even bull riding, this weekend in sports has it all. Our bloggers offered their view on incorporating O.R. into sports, as a way to improve...
Everything from pink spreadsheets to photos of O.R. memories, love and O.R. were in the blogosphere for the month of February. The blog “O.R. at Work” is involved at a global level with #LoveSafely and the North Star Alliance to provide healthcare services and supplies across Africa to help with the fight against AIDS. O.R. can help in your personal search for love (secretary problem), wooing...
The January blog challenge of O.R. and Politics provided many scenarios of how operations research can improve the political process (or not.) One of the common threads was the ability of O.R. to provide transparency and logical solutions in situations commonly dominated by politicians whose main motivation is...
A very provocative study, The Ivory Ceiling of Service Work, conducted at my institution, UMass Amherst, by Joya Misra, Jennifer Hickes Lundquist, Elissa Dahlberg Holmes and Stephanie Agiomavritis, is being released today in Academe. The study, based on a survey of 350 faculty, confirmed...
INFORMS’ first Blog Challenge was a hit! We received 14 entries on the topic of O.R. and the Holidays. INFORMS leadership has taken concrete steps to understand and address the burgeoning analytics marketplace. After spirited debate at the recent Board of Directors meeting at INFORMS Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas, the Board approved funding in order to take a closer look at (1) developing an analytics certification program, (2) developing an analytics training/continuing education program, and ...
I’m off to Austin tomorrow, and looking forward to this conference even than most. Partly, this is due to Austin, a city I have never been to before. I particularly like the “Keep INFORMS Weird” page: this looks like it is going to be a fun place to be!
To me, there are three very exciting things to look forward to for the rest of the year: starting my new job as an Assistant Professor in Marketing at City University of Hong Kong in July; having another baby boy in August; and returning to Austin for INFORMS Annual Meeting in November!
