The president of INFORMS has appointed a committee to conduct a strategic review of the journal. The goals of this strategic review are to understand the state of the journal; to identify new issues, new challenges, and new ideas; and to listen to the journal's customers. Organization Science has evolved to become one of the premier international journals in management and organization theory. All INFORMS members are welcome to send their input to Jesper Sorensen, Committee Chair, at sorensen@stanford.edu. More information can be found here.
In the military, the talent and aptitude of individual soldiers can lead to good planning, superior intelligence, better war gaming, frontline excellence, and lives spared. Poor soldiering can lead to defeat and death. So shouldn't there be metrics put to every soldier? That's what U.S. Army Major Rob Dees argues. He presented his findings at the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research earlier this month. Hear him make his case at www.scienceofbetter.org/podcast.
The INFORMS board, staff, and membership join in extending condolences to the family of Alberto Caprara, an editor for the INFORMS Journal on Computing and the 1997 winner of the George B. Dantzig Dissertation Award. Prof. Caprara died in a mountaineering accident in Italy earlier this month; he was 44 years old. His colleague at the University of Bologna and fellow JOC Editor Michela Milano remembered him with these words: "We are all really sad and astonished. Not only was Alberto a colleague and a friend, but he was one of the smartest minds in the field of O.R."
The INFORMS board, staff, and membership join in extending condolences to the family of Jerzy Holubiec, who died in Poland at the age of 80. Dr. Holubiec was a strong presence at the Polish Academy of Sciences and the founding member of the INFORMS Chapter in Poland. An obituary of Dr. Holubiec appears here.
The INFORMS board, staff, and membership join in extending condolences to the family of veteran operations researcher Jeremy Shapiro. The MIT professor died on April 14; he was 72 years old. Prof. Shapiro served for nine years as codirector of MIT's Operations Research Center. More recently, he had focused on designing and applying modeling systems to analyze real-world decision problems in supply chain management, finance, and marketing. The second edition of his book, Modeling the Supply Chain, was published in 2007. At the time of his death, he was scheduled to speak at the INFORMS Analytics Conference. An obituary appeared in the Boston Globe.
