Many operations researchers have quietly complained that government would function more smoothly if politicians trained in quantitative methods were in charge of public policy. Now that wish is granted. Democrat Joseph P. Kennedy III, the grandson of the late Robert F. Kennedy, won office in Massachusetts' 4th District this week. Kennedy, who succeeds Rep. Barney Frank, studied industrial engineering and management science at Stanford University.
