Data-driven Appointment Scheduling in the Presence of No-shows



Presented by Michele Samorani - Alberta School of Business and Linda LaGanga - Mental Health Center of Denver

In this session, Samorani and LaGanga Grabau consider the problem of scheduling outpatient appointments in the presence of no-shows. Predictive analytics is used to forecast the show outcome of appointment requests, which are optimally scheduled given this prediction. Descriptive analytics is used to interpret the solutions of the scheduling problem in order to derive a heuristic policy, which, depending on the show rate and on the prediction quality, outperforms the reigning scheduling policy, open access. Prescriptive analytics is used to identify the conditions under which one should adopt overbooking or same-day scheduling.

In this session, Meyland and Hagquist present a decision-support system combining simulation and optimization for field use that analyzes the classic tradeoff between purchasing highway right of ways in advance of construction to avoid cost escalation with using the funds for other worthwhile purposes.

BracketOdds: Examining the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament with Advanced Analytics



Presented by Sheldon H. Jacobson – University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

In this session, Jacobson explores the use of advanced analytics to assess the probability that a combination of seeds will advance in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament (aka March Madness) based on historical tournament results. Beginning in 2011, this model was adapted into a web-based tool, allowing users to assess prospective brackets online and leading to significant popular and media attention.
