The Outlook for Energy: A View of 2030

Dong Fu
Senior Economist - Corporate Strategic Planning, ExxonMobil
Location: Davidson Auditorium SOM 1.118, UTD Campus
Visitor Parking Passes available at the front gate entrance from Campbell Rd.

Abstract:
Energy - in all its forms - is critical to economic growth, development & social welfare. From the world’s most modern cities to the smallest communities in developing countries, reliable access to affordable energy is necessary to drive long-term economic and social progress. Over the next two decades, demand for energy is forecasted to rise dramatically across the globe, as populations and economies grow at rapid rates. This presentation focuses on energy demand to the year 2030. It examines key drivers of rising demand and the way this demand will be met by the various available energy sources, including fossil fuels, nuclear power and renewable energies. It concludes by providing insights into the challenge of meeting growing energy needs while mitigating global CO2 emissions.

About Dong Fu:

Gas-Flow Sharing Game

Irinel Dragan
Univ. of Texas at Arlington

Abstract:
Oil and gas companies share pipelines to ship their products. A gas pipeline can start at a drilling range (upstream) and extend to a city, where the gas is distributed (downstream) to consumers. Gas companies cooperate to efficiently use the pipeline to transfer gas from upstream to downstream. But they compete to share the shipped gas. This sharing can be done through the egalitarian value or the Shapley value of the “gas flow sharing game”. A fairer solution is the Nucleolus of the game that can be computed via a series of linear optimization problems.

Demand Planning in
Consume Packaged Goods
Bekir Diker
Dr. Pepper Snapple Group

Location: SOM 1.508–Executive Education AreaUT-Dallas Campus

Abstract:
Forecast is built by the collective effort of sales, marketing, supply chain and finance teams by considering

1) Statistically generated forecast,

2) Promotional events,

3) Gained/lost distribution of the product,

4) Lifecycle ofthe product, and

5) Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment.

Reduced forecasterror translates to higher customer service level and reduced working capital. Therefore, it is critical to track theerror and identify the offenders. The root causesof error are discussed with the stakeholders and eliminated.

P.S. Subramaniam
Senior Manager, Nokia North America Customer Logistics, is presenting:

Demand Forecasting at Nokia

Accurate demand planning or forecasting is both an art and a science. This is especially evident at Nokia and the mobile handset business where we have intense competition, model customization, product substitutability and a complex raw materials supply chain. In this discussion we present two different methodologies on product forecasts - one for the near term and one for the longer term. The near term forecast is used to drive product replenishment and consumer sales in various channels and is based on robust sales & operations planning across the value chain. The longer term forecast is driven by product lifecycle planning, price position, sourcing of raw materials and manufacturing planning. We will present situational examples and implications of forecasting with imperfect information.

Network Optimization in Supply Chain Strategy

Every day, more organizations are discovering the practical value of optimization in decisions concerning supply, manufacturing, and distribution. The use of optimization tools helps them find opportunities that are hidden even to the informed observer. Finding such opportunities is more important when decisions have long-term implications, as is the case in times of expansion or consolidation.

In this session, the scope of supply chain strategy and its operational goal will be presented. We will point out how easily the problem becomes a complex combinatorial one. We will also illustrate the dangers of relying too much on common-sense assumptions in the solution process and discuss the benefits of using a proper optimization tool. Finally, we will walk through a demonstration of one such tool.

"OR's Role in Risk Management in the Aftermatch of the Financial Crisis"

Dr. John R. Birge, University of Chicago

The financial crisis of 2008-09 has raised questions in the minds of many about the role of risk management and the limitations of quantative modeling. This talk will describe some of the potential causes of the crisis and the role that Operations Research related models might have played. Form these observations, the presentation will focus on the challenges for modeling and implementation to avoid future crises and the opportunities for further research.
Dr. Birge is the Jerry W. and Carol Lee Levin Professor of Operations Management, at The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He studies mathematical modeling of systems under uncertainty, especially for maximizing operational and financial goals using the methodologies of stochastic programming and large-scale optimization. He has consulted a number of financial organizations including Deutsche Bank, Allstate Insurance Company, Morgan Stanley.
