Skiing and Snowboarding
Santa Fe and the surrounding areas provide numerous opportunities for skiing, ranging from the small and largely unknown to world-class. We provide a brief summary of the main ski locations in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado here. Far more voluminous and detailed information can of course be found on the web. Detailed package and pricing information can be found on the various resort web sites provided below.
Important: We do not recommend skiing the day or two following your arrival in Santa Fe. Santa Fe is approximately 7,200 feet above sea level, and the ski resorts are even higher: the typical area base lies at over 10,000 feet above sea level, and the runs reach over 12,000 feet. Please leave appropriate time for altitude acclimation!
Ski Santa Fe
Ski Santa Fe is the closest resort to the conference hotel, with an approximately (weather-dependent) 30 minute transit time each way.
Taos Ski Valley
Taos Ski Valley provides world-class skiing and snowboarding (for the latter, only recently!), and is an internationally recognized destination. Taos offers the most difficult terrain in northern New Mexico, with 35 expert and 43 double black runs. Taos is approximately two hours from the conference hotel.
Pajarito and Sipapu
Pajarito Mountain and Sipapu are both within an hour of Santa Fe, and offer fewer crowds than Ski Santa Fe and Taos.
Southern Colorado Resorts
Many large resorts in southern Colorado are within a 3-5 hour drive of Santa Fe, allowing for relatively convenient alternatives for skiing / snowboarding either preceding or following the main ICS conference. These include Durango Mountain Resort, Wolf Creek Ski Area, and Telluride Ski and Snowboard Resort.
