Overview
The Military Applications Society (MAS) is a technical society within the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). MAS welcomes members from around the globe who share a common interest in its goals. |
The goals of MAS are to:
- advance research in global defense-related topics, including military operations, governmental operations and security, and nation support;
- foster high standards in the practice of military operations research;
- promote the global exchange of information and ideas amongst developers and users of military operations research tools and techniques; and,
- help develop students and practitioners of military operations research to be capable of addressing the complex challenges of the 21st century.
MAS does this through a program of meetings, awards, publications and other activities independently and in concert with sister societies such as the Military Operations Research Society (MORS).

A quick update on MAS activities for our Charlotte INFORMS Conference starting this coming weekend:
- More than 75 analysts are scheduled to present across 24 sessions, included 9 joint presentations with CPMS, Decision Analysis Society, and Homeland Security; we also will sponsor two tutorial presentations.
- During our annual business meeting Monday evening we will present several awards, including the Seth Bonder OR Scholarship and 2011 Bernard O. Koopman Prize.
- We will also recognize and thank departing MAS council members who complete their respective terms of office this year: Niki Goerger, Lee Stenson, Bill Klimack, and our stalwart Secretary Treasurer Alan Johnson. Please join me in thanking them all for their special contributions to this unique professional society.
- And, as replacements, we’ll welcome and induct three new MAS council representatives: Cal Poly Pomona Engineering School Dean Mayhar Amouzegar; US Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Chad Long; and West Point Math Professor and former department chair, retired Brigadier General Chris Arney.
- Our current MAS “webmeister”, NPS professor and Navy Commander Walt DeGrange, will step up to fill our Secretary Treasurer council position, and Chad Long will backfill Walt as our new MAS Webmaster.

MAS Events 2012
The planning committee for our Spring 2012 Annual MAS Conference in Monterey has been established and is now soliciting session chairs, suggestions for keynote presenters, etc, - please contact VP Bill Fox (wpfox@nps.edu) if you would like to chair a session and/or have suggestions to offer for program content.
We are also considering a “joint” INFORMS Regional conference sometime later in 2012 that could be co-hosted by MSOM and MAS, focused on military logistics, operations management, and supply chain themes – likely in Huntsville, AL extending our previous conferences here. This is exploratory at this point, but if you would be interested in the initial planning efforts please contact either Greg or Professor Chase Murray (ccm0022@auburn.edu).
