About Us

Operations research and management science (OR/MS)

is a field devoted to utilizing analytical methods to obtain good solutions to difficult problems which involve the intricate interactions of people, processes, materials and information. The field of operations research and management science draws from many academic disciplines including math, engineering, business and computer science to provide solid mathematical backing for decision makers on problems which could not be easily
addressed by manual inspection. The modeling and analysis of these problems is the focus of operations research and the management sciences.

The University at Buffalo Student Chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (UB INFORMS)

seeks to encourage the academic and professional development
of those students who are interested in operations research and the management sciences while
spreading awareness of the benefits of OR/MS. This goal will be accomplished through a focus on the
following main objectives:

1. Encouraging general interest in the field of Operations Research (OR) and the Management Sciences (MS)
2. Providing a means of communication and networking opportunities for people with an interest in OR/MS
3. Providing informal educational and teaching opportunities in areas of OR/MS (student run tutorial sessions)
4. Providing a forum for sharing information about methods and techniques utilized in OR/MS
5. Visiting local business who utilize OR/MS techniques
