INFORMS Education and Student Affairs: For Math Teachers

High School Math Materials

The INFORMS Public Awareness Committee, which works to give high school students an appreciation of OR and mathematics, has issued the newest classroom materials with real-life examples of OR for high school math students and teachers. The module explaining zero-one decision variables is the latest in the INFORMS Mathematics for Decision Making in Industry and Government series.

To help your students appreciate the value of studying math, INFORMS sponsors Teacher Workshops for teachers twice a year at its two national meetings. The meetings take place in a different city every six months and provide local teachers with materials and lesson plans to bring back to the classroom.

INFORM-ED maintains a web page with extensive educational resources, including workshops, on-line course materials, case resources, the Education Forum column in OR/MS Today, the Magnanti Report, short courses & tutorials, and textbooks. Their web page is a useful resource for teachers.

Videotapes

INFORMS has two videotapes available for teachers:

Middle School or High School teachers who plan to use either as a classroom teaching tool can obtain a video at no charge by sending a request on school stationery to the following address. The video will be mailed within a few days of receipt of the request. If you are not a teacher, please send to the address above your check for $7.99 (USD) along with your written request for either the high school video or the middle school video.

901 Elkridge Landing Road
Suite 400
Linthicum, MD 21076
Attn: [Middle School Video] or [High School Video]

Note: Neither the middle school video nor the high school video would be of interest to college level students. However, another video is available (at a price of $10.00) that would appeal to a more general audience. It discusses several fascinating examples of operations research in real world applications. Please send your check for $10.00 (USD) to the address above and indicate that you wish to order: "Operations Research: Science and Technology for Informed Decision Making."

Standards

NCTM has released draft standards entitled Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
