INFORMS News: Doing Good with Good O.R. finalists
Six finalists have been named in this year’s Doing Good with Good O.R. Prize competition. The prize recognizes work conducted by students that applies operations research and management science methodology to solve problems of societal importance. The nominations featured applications in areas such as healthcare, homeland security and energy. The six finalists included:
- Mehmet Ayvaci, University of Wisconsin, Madison: “The Effect of Budgetary Restrictions on Breast Cancer Diagnostic Decisions”
- Russell Harpring, University of Louisville: “Using Simulation Methods to Guide Decision Making of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services”
- Jonathan Helm and Greggory Schell, University of Michigan: “Dynamic Monitoring of Chronic Disease”
- Amber Kunkel, Elizabeth Van Itallie and Duo Wu, Rice University: “Optimal Distribution of Medical Backpacks and Health Surveillance Assistants in Malawi”
- Alex Mills, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill: “Resource-Based Patient Prioritization in Mass-Casualty Incidents”
- Daphne Sniekers, University of Toronto: “Improving Patient Access to Surgical Care at the Juravinski Hospital through Informed Decision-Making”
The finalists were selected on the basis of a short summary of the work, nomination letters from a faculty advisor or partner organization and an abstract. To continue in the competition, finalists must submit a full paper on their work and present in the prize sessions at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix on Oct. 14. The winner(s) will be announced at the Awards Ceremony that evening.
The members of the prize committee are Sila Çetinkaya (co-chair), Jérémie Gallien, Michael Johnson, Donna Llewellyn and Susan Martonosi (co-chair).
