Abstract
This paper advocates the practice of interpreting the qualitative pattern in a linear programming solution. This practice should be part of the instruction we offer on LP, because it helps students gain insight that enhances decision-making. In linear programs, the optimal solution tells a story about the pattern of economic priorities, and the recognition of these priorities can provide useful insight. The pattern also helps us anticipate some of the answers to "what if" questions. The discussion covers several examples of patterns, shows how to describe a pattern without using numbers, and provides two tests to confirm that the pattern has been articulated.
