Erhan Erkut
Erhan Erkut received a BS in Industrial Engineering from Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey) in 1980 and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from University of Florida in 1986. He currently holds the Vargo Distinguished Teaching Chair at the University of Alberta. His research interests are in the location of undesirable facilities and the transportation of hazardous materials. He has published a number of journal articles in these areas, and has held several research grants.
Dr. Erkut teaches the Introduction to Business course (400+ students) and the introductory operations management course (300+ students) in the University of Alberta School of Business. He has experimented, and continues to experiment, with different approaches to teaching during the last decade in an effort to popularize management science and operations management in a business faculty. In addition to the introductory courses, he teaches electives in distribution management and management consulting. He has received a Faculty Teaching Award in 1997, a University Teaching Award in 1998, and National Teaching Awards in 1999 and 2003.
Dr. Erkut is the founder and the first President of INFORM-ED (INFORMS Forum on Education). He has also served as the Chair of the INFORMS Education Committee from 1997 to 2000. As well, he served as the Chair of CORS (Canadian Operational Research Society) Education Committee, managing the CORS Diploma program, from 1997 to 2003.
