After receiving his Ph.D. in the area of computer science from Yale University, Dr. Savage spent a year at General Motors Research Laboratory. He joined the faculty of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business in 1974 where he taught until 1990. While at Chicago he pioneered the use of analytical modeling in spreadsheets with development of What's Best!®, the first widely marketed spreadsheet optimization package. Sam and Linus Schrage won a PC Magazine Technical Excellence Award for this work in 1986. Dr. Savage went on to create a seminar series on Management Science in Spreadsheets, that exposed thousands of executives to the basics of optimization, simulation and forecasting in the 1990's.

Dr. Savage is currently a Consulting Professor of Management Science & Engineering at Stanford University. He is also the founder and president of AnalyCorp Inc. , a firm that develops executive education programs and software for improving business analysis. He consults and lectures extensively to business and government agencies and has served as an expert witness. He has been published in both refereed journals and the popular press - with recent articles in the Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Portfolio Management, Financial Planning Magazine and the Washington Post. Dr. Savage is the author of Decision Making with Insight, published by Duxbury Press. This book with spreadsheet add-ins attempts to explain Management Science concepts by connecting the seat of the intellect to the seat of the pants.
