Jan H van Vuuren
Jan H van Vuuren was born on 2 February 1969 in Durban, South Africa. After completing his secondary school training in 1986 he enrolled for a bachelor of Science degree at Stellenbosch University (50 km from Cape Town, South Africa) with Mathematics and Applied Mathematics as majors. This degree he obtained with distinction in 1989, and followed it up with an honours degree in Applied Mathematics at the same universty in 1990, also with distinction. Thereafter he enrolled for a Master of Science degree at Stellenbosch. After obtaining this degree (with distiction) in 1992 he finally enrolled for a doctorate in Mathematics at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Upon completion of his studies in 1995, he was appointed as temporary lecturer at the Department of Applied Mathematics at Stellenbosch University in 1996. In 1997 he became senior lecturer and in 2003 associate professor of Applied Mathematics at the same department. He was promoted to full professor and head of Operations Research within the Department of Logistics at Stellenbosch University in 2007.
His research interests include combinatorial optimization and graph theory. He is a South African National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher and editor-in-chief of ORiON, the NRF-accredited journal of the Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORSSA). He has won numerous national and international research awards and serves on the National Executive Committee of ORSSA.
