Tom Grossman
Tom Grossman received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University. For about five years before the Ph.D. experience he worked as a management consultant with Talus Solutions of Mountain View California. His practice focused on strategic pricing and "revenue management" for American and European airlines, and included fleet scheduling and planning, market and passenger flow assessment, and R&D program management for the electric utility industry. He also consulted to Apple Computer in their early supply chain management efforts. Prior to his consulting adventures, he received a M.Sc. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford and a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
He has taught at Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He is developing and delivering leading-edge spreadsheet analytics courses in the MBA and B.Comm. programs, and has written a series of management science cases with a managerial focus. He also teaches operations management, service operations, and supply chain management to executives. He is Past-President of the Education Forum of the INFORMS professional society, is Founding Editor of INFORMS Case and Teaching Materials, and is Associate Editor of INFORMS Transactions on Education.
His research activity includes business analytics, spreadsheet engineering, call center management, and optimal congestion pricing. He recently completed the first field research into end-user modeling, with surprising insights into how managers use the sophisticated business analytic tools now available in spreadsheets. Recent publications appear in Interfaces, The Encyclopedia of Operations Research and Management Science 2nd Edition, and the International Journal of Production Economics.
