Call for Papers

Transportation and Logistics have a growing importance in a global economy. As parts and products travel longer distances over more modes of transport, supply chains become more fragile, complex, and costly to manage. As transportation and logistics costs rise in importance, inventory, handling, lot size, and mode choice decisions have a larger effect on corporate profitability. From public welfare perspective, secure and sustainable world freight transport system concerns must be balanced with efficient transportation and logistics networks.

Operations research can play a critical role in designing, operating, and improving freight transportation and logistics systems. Accordingly, Interfaces is planning a special issue focusing on the application of operations research techniques on freight transportation and logistics.

Papers should fall into one of the following categories:
• An application with a verification letter from the company or organization using the results
• A novel literature review of operations research related to freight transportation and logistics
• A novel tutorial emphasizing the practical implementation of transportation and logistics systems

Authors should review the Interfaces instructions on preparing a paper at http://interfaces.pubs.informs.org/guidelines.htm. Papers must be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/inte. In the Author Center of Manuscript Central, please designate the “Manuscript Type” (#1—“Type, Title, and Abstract”’) as “Special Issue” in the drop-down list; in #4—“Details and Comments,” respond “Operations Research in Freight Transportation & Logistics” to the question, “This paper is for which special issue?”

All papers will be refereed. Articles must be received no later than November 15, 2012 for full consideration.

Papers and Reviewers, Book Reviews

In Book Reviews, we review an extensive and diverse range of books. They cover theory and applications in operations research, statistics, management science, econometrics, mathematics, computers, and information systems. In addition, we include books in other fields that emphasize technical applications. Practice Summaries

The goal of "Practice Summaries" is to present interesting, topical, and novel applications of operations research (OR) methodology to a wide range of industrial applications. "Practice Summaries" are intended to provide Interfaces readers with short (2-4 page) descriptions of the most relevant aspects of OR-based projects, in a form that is accessible to academics and practitioners in other organizations. The content of the "Practice Summary" should include:

The problem and the client company or agency, including background information as necessary;
Who in the client organization sponsored the work and who did the work;
What OR approaches or models were used, and how they were applied to the problem, identifying software packages where appropriate;
What the organization learned and what happened subsequently, including the current status of the work if it is ongoing, and in particular how the organization has received and used the results. We encourage authors to report constructive negative results.
