Stochastic Models
Costis Maglaras and Bert Zwart
The Stochastic Models area seeks to publish papers that are of broad and fundamental interest to researchers dealing with stochastic models in the OR community. This includes papers that propose new models, perform analysis, develop analytical, computational, and statistical methods for the study of systems where stochastic variability plays an important role. We welcome papers that explore applications of stochastic modeling and analysis in functional areas such as revenue management, manufacturing, service and supply chain operations, financial engineering, healthcare, social learning and Internet economics, and telecommunication and networking.
In deciding between submission to Stochastic Models and submission to a functional area or a field journal, the central question is whether a paper makes contributions that transcend its functional context, and/or highlight important applications of stochastic modeling in a novel application domain.
Although rigor is an important criterion for eventual publication, it is not sufficient in itself. The editorial board will also consider the importance of the systems being modeled, the originality of the modeling and analysis, the quality of the results obtained or methods proposed, the clarity of the exposition, and thus, the overall utility of the work to the OR community. As in the past, we will continue to publish work that provides substantial structural insights via the analysis of tractable yet reasonable models of stochastic systems, and, within the above criteria, we encourage the submission of work that may have direct implications to policy questions, or lead to tools building on stochastic analysis that have direct practical significance and applicability.
