Quite possibly, there may be no larger financial impact of operations research on the military community than that of sustainability. There are three reasons for this: the savings are real, the analyses are the province of operations analysts, and there are strong reasons for it to be a major destabilizer of the defense economy. The problem of performance and cost to sustainability is addressed explicitly by the many papers in this volume. The deeper problem also covered in this book is the time-deferral problem: the procurement decision of one administration becomes the burden of their successors.
