This book is a revised, updated version of a study done for the U.S. Army and documented under the titles “The Validity of Assumptions Underlying Current Uses of Lanchester Attrition Rates.” In this book, great emphasis is placed on assumptions, results and concepts as they relate to small-to-moderate size battles. It is important to emphasize that the models presented here are only concerned with the progress of the fight once it has begun. Optimization, as discussed in this text, employs differential game theory, dynamic programming, game theory, control theory, and mathematical programming procedures that are required for good fire-fight models to operate upon.
