Citation:

E. E. David Jr., J. G. Truxal, and E. J. Piel have won the 1971 Lanchester Prize for their book The Man-Made World.

Thomas E. Caywood, Chairman of the Lanchester Prize Committee and former ORSA President, made the presentation. He stated that "This book is written in such a manner to inspire young students to learn about how Operations Research and Systems Analysis can be applied to problems of the real world. The Committee has received knowledge that this book has been warmly received by teachers and students of liberal arts and first year engineering schools, as well as advanced high school classes. The book presents a comprehensive collection of kinds of problems that can be treated and it can be used as a text in conjunction with a laboratory program which gives students an opportunity to deal with real problems. It is simply and clearly written but presents many kinds of methodology in a stimulating manner to persons with a minimum of mathematical training. It is a true introduction to modern Operations Research. "
