The Lanchester Prize Committee chose three "deserving" individuals and two "excellent" publications for the 1989 prize.

The 1989 Lanchester Prize was shared by Jean Walrand, author of An Introduction to Queueing Networks (Prentice Hall, 1988), and George L. Nemhauser and Laurence A. Wolsey, whose combined efforts produced Integer and Combinatorial Optimization (John Wiley, 1988).

The committee cited Walrand for a "remarkable job of bringing together state-of-the-art research on many different aspects of queueing networks" in his book, An Introduction to Queueing Networks. All topics are covered with rigor and clarity, using many examples and motivational discussions."

"A lot of exciting work is going on in queueing networks and its application to communication networks, computer systems, manufacturing systems and other fields. I am thankful to my students and to my colleagues for their help and support in my research," said Walrand.

The citation concludes by predicting that Walrand's book will "attract a wider audience and have major impact on our profession for a long period to come."

Walrand is a professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California-Berkeley.
