Pierskalla Best Paper Award Application Process
Any paper presented in a session sponsored by the Health Applications Section during the INFORMS annual meeting is eligible for the award. However, to be considered for the award, a full paper must be submitted by July 1 to the Chair of Pierskalla Committee. The paper must be presented at the conference to receive the award, although the judging is based on the written paper. The paper submission can be a working paper, a paper under review, or a previously published paper. If desired by the authors, the winning paper will be published in Health Care Management Science if it has not been published or is not under review elsewhere.
Judging: Papers are judged by a panel of up to four representatives from the Health Applications Section on:
- Contribution to operations research/management science in health care
- Readability, clarity and organization of the paper
- Technical content and scope relative to the length of the paper
- Originality
The panel judging the papers reserves the right not to award a prize in any given year.
Application Process: Contact the current Chair of the Pierskalla Committee to submit your abstract and to present the results in a Health Applications Section sponsored session. A deidentified electronic copy in Adobe Portable Document (PDF) must be submitted.

The paper should not contain any author identification. Each submission must be accompanied by a PDF cover letter containing:
- Complete contact information for the corresponding author
- Social Security Numbers for all authors (if U.S. citizens or residents), which are needed to process checks for the INFORMS annual meeting
- If there are multiple authors, how the honorarium is to be distributed and whether they want individual award plaques
The winning paper will not be announced until the Health Applications Section's business meeting at the INFORMS annual meeting. Please note that you'll be required to make a presentation in the Pierskalla Award session. As soon as your submission is received, an invitation will be send out to present in the session.
