INFORMS COMMUNITIES

Misc > Globe cornerINFORMS communities - also known as subdivisions - are important, independent bodies that unite members into local regional groups, focus on special technical interests, and provide the backbone for the organization. Many members belong to more than one group. Communities sponsor conferences, regular meetings, sessions at annual meetings, educational programs, and awards; some provide professional journals and resource publications.

In 2007 INFORMS embarked on a new concept in uniting communities, with the inaugural INFORMS Midwest Regional Conference.  Our hope is that this important event will be the first of many regional conferences, helping to facilitate communication among OR/MS practitioners and academics alike.  The 2008 Southwest Regional Conference will be held at Texas A&M University, April 18-19, 2008.

INFORMS communities make it happen. Have a special interest? Your community needs you! Join a community and volunteer your energy, talents, and knowledge. You will network with great people and make a positive contribution to both the community and your résumé.

Organization

INFORMS communities are organized into the following units:

Societies
INFORMS societies are the flagships of the INFORMS communities. The societies are significantly larger than the sections, chapters, or fora, and focus on a common theme.

Sections
INFORMS sections are technical interest groups devoted to advancing the professional interests of members in specialized and technical aspects of our profession. Sections are smaller, focused bodies of INFORMS that offer you the chance to meet and work with professionals who are interested in a specific area of operations research and management science.

Chapters
INFORMS chapters unite colleagues in particular geographical areas, offer the opportunity to gain immediate access to advances in the field and establish a personal networking system in the locale. INFORMS has chartered over thirty chapters internationally.

Student Chapters
A professional start for students that introduces them to their professional organization. Student chapters are generally located at universities that also house programs of interest to the fields of operations research and the management sciences. They offer meetings with speakers and demonstrations of new methods and applications in the field.

Fora
INFORMS fora unite colleagues with professional interests that are neither disciplinary nor geographic. The goal of these fora is to faciliate interaction among members with these interests and provide a medium for formal reporting of topics of interest to the INFORMS board.
