Hello fellow INFORM-ED Members,

I hope all of you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break and are getting settled in for the remainder of the academic year. INFORM-ED continues to work on various initiatives and activities. A short summary of some of these efforts follows:

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

Our forum is very busy organizing various activities designed to improve ORMS education and assist ORMS educators. Upcoming activities include:

-   the 6th annual Case Competition

-   the 7th annual Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium

-   a sponsored education track for the 2005 INFORMS Conference in New Orleans (November 13 - 16)

More details about these and other INFORM-ED activities are provided in the STATUS REPORTS OF ONGOING EDUCATION INITIATIVES below.

OTHER ACTIVITIES OF INTEREST TO INFORM-ED MEMBERS

Our officers are helping to coordinate many other activities that should be of interest to INFORM-ED members. These activities include:

-   Moving the annual INFORM-ED reception and business meeting from its traditional Tuesday evening to Sunday evening apparently caused little confusion and was more convenient for several INFORM-ED members. The 40+ people who attended the reception and business meeting in Denver enjoyed snacks and beverages (beer, wine, soda, cheese, crackers, etc.), discussed various ORMS education issues, and heard updates from INFORM-ED Officers and Editors on INFORM-ED's various efforts. -   The INFORM-ED sponsored sessions at the INFORMS Conference in Denver attracted large and enthusiastic audiences. The three sessions jointly sponsored by INFORM-ED and the OR in SpORts section were also extremely successful; these sessions exceedingly well attended (SRO) by fervent and energetic audiences. Furthermore, several conference attendees commented to me on the quality of the INFORM-ED invited sessions!

-   The related special issue of INFORMS Transactions on Education on 'SpORts in the OR Classroom' (September 2004) is now available on-line. Linking the sponsored sessions and special issue of INFORMS Transactions on Education worked well and has been very well-received. INFORM-ED will work with Harvey Greenburg (Special Issues Editor for INFORMS Transactions on Education) and David Woodruff and Stefan Voss (Guest Editors for INFORMS Transactions on Education's 2005 special issue on 'Integrating OR in the Teaching of Supply Chain Management') to facilitate similar coordination between the journal and INFORM-ED sponsored sessions. -   Erhan Erkut (Editor-in-Chief) invites you to visit the INFORMS Transactions on Education website (http://ite.pubs.informs.org/) and read a variety of provocative new articles on ORMS education. Erhan also encourages you to submit your article that relates to any aspect of OR/MS education.

-   Steve Powell, Academic Director of INFORMS Summer Workshop on Teaching Management Science, is currently organizing the 2005 INFORMS Summer Workshop on Teaching Management Science. The workshop will be held on July 28-31, at the Harrison Conference Center in Lake Bluff, Illinois. This 2004 INFORMS Summer Workshop on Teaching Management Science was a tremendous success, offering great sessions and a tremendous opportunity to interact with colleagues who are interested in ORMS education. This will be a great event for college instructors at all levels, so plan to attend!

-   Armann Ingolfsson is organizing an education cluster at the 2005 CORS (Canadian
Operational Research Society) meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia from May
16 to 18. CORS conferences are typically small (200-400 attendees) but of high
quality. Armann encourages anyone who gave an education-related presentation
at the Denver INFORMS meeting to consider presenting in Halifax as well; although many CORS members attend INFORMS meetings, you are likely to face a different audience. The natural beauty and history of Halifax and Nova Scotia make it well worth a visit. See http://www.dal.ca/~jblake/cors2005/ for more information about the conference, and contact Armann at Armann.Ingolfsson@ualberta.ca by January 31 if you are interested giving a presentation or organizing a session on anything related to OR/MS education.

-   Ken Chelst is again planning to Chair an INFORMS Teachers Program: How to Teach the Teachers session at the annual INFORMS Conference in November. This session, sponsored by INFORMS' Public Awareness Committee, will provide you with everything you need to "Teach the Teachers" at a local or state math teacher conference near your home. Members of the PAC team that developed the INFORMS materials (available at http://www.hsor.org) will demonstrate how to conduct these workshops at this comprehensive briefing. As a session participant, you will receive the program materials, videos, software packages (with instructions), and Teacher Instructional Modules you need to deliver a program at a state, county, or school district conference.

-   Alan Schwarz, author of the "Keeping Score" columnist for the Sunday New York Times and The Numbers Game: Baseball's Lifelong Fascination with Statistics (which was both an Amazon bestseller and named by ESPN as the best baseball book of 2004), has offered to visit classes and discuss statistics/operations research in baseball -- the science behind the numbers, the cultural phenomenon of people's interest in them (since 1860), his use of statistical thought and methods in his work, etc. I reviewed The Numbers Game: Baseball's Lifelong Fascination with Statistics for The Journal of the American Statistical Association & The American Statistician and thoroughly enjoyed it - Alan devotes a great deal of the book to the works of several operations researchers from the 1950s (George Lindsey, etc.) as well as Nobel Prize-winning scientists (Ed Purcell, Stephen Jay Gould, etc.) in whom statistics & operations research students should have a profound interest. Alan would also make a fine guest speaker for a meeting of a local INFORMS chapter - INFORMS members should have great interest in his work.

Alan has a BA in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania (1990) and planned on entering teaching before diverting to journalism. He has guest lectured at Harvard (for Carl Morris of the Department of Statistics) and appeared on dozens of television and radio programs. He is not asking to be paid for lectures, but he would appreciate expenses and/or a small honorarium to help make ends meet. You can contact Alan at:

-   The OR/MS Tomorrow staff is pleased to announced that the winter issue of OR/MS Tomorrow, the INFORMS student online newsletter, is now available on the OR/MS Tomorrow website (http://ormstomorrow.informs.org).

This issue features:

OTHER NOTES OF INTEREST

-   INFORM-ED is the only INFORMS subdivision that has grown in every year since 1999. Our recent membership numbers are:

*As of September 1, 2004 our 314 members consist of 154 students, 10 retirees, and 16 that do not belong to INFORMS. These numbers (particularly the current number of INFORM-ED student members) are very encouraging and are a testament to the efforts of the volunteers who work on and support INFORMS' various education-oriented activities.

-   Lisa Klose resigned from her position of Director of Marketing, Research and Product Development on November 19, 2004. Lisa was instrumental in the creation and establishment of several INFORMS education initiatives. INFORM-ED appreciates all the valuable assistance she has given us during her employment with INFORMS, and we will miss her. INFORMS Executive Director Mark Doherty is working to find a replacement for Lisa; in the interim, Lisa's former responsibilities will be in the very capable hands of Mary Magrogan and Christy Kline.

STATUS REPORTS OF ONGOING EDUCATION INITIATIVES

-   John Fowler (Combined Colloquia Chair) updates us on his committees' progress in developing the program for INFORMS Combined Colloquia (the Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium, Doctoral Student Colloquium, and Industry Colloquium) for the upcoming annual INFORMS Conference in New Orleans (November 13 - 16).

-   William Christian (VP - Projects) updates us on his investigation into the benefits INFORM-ED could accrue from participation by corporate trainers/educators.

-   Chris Zappe (VP - Publications and past Case Competition Chair) announces the results of the fifth annual Case Competition that was held at the recent 2004 INFORMS Conference in Denver.

-   Tasha Innis (Case Competition Chair) has assumed the role of Case Competition Chair beginning in 2005. She updates us on the sixth annual Case Competition and explains how you can enter this year's competition (to be held at the upcoming annual INFORMS Conference in New Orleans).

-   Julie Swann (VP - External Relations) discusses he progress in developing INFORM-ED's speaker program for Local and Student Chapters.

-   Pinar Keskinocak (Vice President - Programs) reports on the INFORM-ED track of sponsored sessions she and Erhan Erkut organized for the 2004 INFORMS Conference in Denver. Pinar also gives a progress report on the INFORM-ED track of sponsored sessions she is organizing for the 2005 INFORMS Conference in New Orleans (November 13 - 16).

-   Joel Sokol (Editor of the 'Issues in Education' Column in ORMS Today) previews the next few columns and invites you to contribute to the column.

-   John Kros (Webmaster) discusses additions and enhancement to our website.

-   Tom Grossman (INFORMS Case and Teaching Materials Editor) discusses the status of the Case and Teaching Materials initiative.

How about using sports examples to jazz up OR teaching?  Check out the sports special issue of INFORMS Transactions on Education.  Read up on examples from each of the major North American team sports (baseball, hockey, basketball, soccer, and American football), addressing topics in scheduling, mathematical programming, decision analysis, simulation, statistics, and probability, and utilizing a variety of classroom tools including cases, classroom examples, active learning exercises, projects, games, and puzzles.

2004 Combined Colloquia: Another Success! - William Christian

 

The 2004 Combined Colloquia coordinated by INFORM-ed was a success. Prior to the Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, we hosted over 150people including participants and speakers for two days of learning and networking.  The speakers were engaging and eager to entertain questions both during their sessions and throughout the weekend.


The Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium, which is in its seventh year, was chaired by Chris Zappe of Bucknell University.  An underlying thread in the sessions was active learning--providing instruction that causes the student to become an active participant in his or her own learning process and thereby absorb and retain more knowledge.  The TEC was a rare opportunity for junior and senior faculty to engage in serious dialogue about improving teaching effectiveness.


The Future Practitioner Colloquium, which is relatively new and developing as a big draw for colloquium participants, was chaired by Ken Murphy of Willamette University.  It featured speakers from a wide range of backgrounds such as researchers, former academicians, young practitioners, and senior-level managers from a variety of industries and government.


The Future Academician Colloquium, the perennial favorite, was chaired by Cole Smith of The University of Arizona.  The diverse selection of speakers addressed virtually every issue that a new faculty member is bound to face; the list includes classroom basics, student advising, grant writing, and publishing.


Each participant received a bound notebook designed and coordinated by Pete Buczkowski of The Disney Corporation containing the contributed material from all of the colloquia.  In related news, Buczkowski also collected the web materials for several past colloquia and these pages
are soon to archived by INFORM-ed.


To reiterate, the Combined Colloquia were a tremendous success.  All the attendees were nominated by the home departments and most were able to attend without expense for the colloquia itself.  Throughout the event, speakers including INFORMS President Michael Rothkopf, Past-President Michael Trick, and Colloquia Chair William Christian encouraged the attendees to return the gift of the weekend by volunteering in future INFORMS events.  Christian noted that prior to this year's position as Chair, he had attended the TEC as a freshman faculty member and later volunteered to organize the TEC.

Update on Outreach - Julie Swann

 

INFORM-ED has recently created a Local/Student Chapters Outreach program.  The program is designed to increase the awareness of INFORM-ED activities and how the forum can benefit the chapters, as well as to increase the future participation in INFORM-ED.


The program will match an INFORM-ED member with a chapter that has expressed interest in knowing more about INFORM-ED.  The member will attend the meeting and talk about what INFORM-ED is, what we do, and what the forum has to offer members.  A presentation will be provided to the member in advance, along with guidance on its content if desired.


So far we have had several requests and several volunteers, and we look forward to increasing participation. If you wish to request a visit from INFORM-ED to your chapter or volunteer your services for this external outreach, please contact Julie Swann at jswann@isye.gatech.edu.  Let's spread the good word about the Teaching of Better!

Announcement:  Call for paper submissions on "Software in the Classroom" for
Hawaii IFORS (July 11-15, 2005)


Have you found ways to inspire or motivate your students by using technology?
Do your students become more involved whenever they are given the opportunity
to use a computer?  Anyone who has developed software for use in the classroom
or has found a software package or particular example to be useful in
communicating ideas to students, here is your opportunity to let others know.

WEB FLASH! - John Kros

 

The INFORM-ED website has some new information posted so go take a look at http://education.forum.informs.org/.  For example, information regarding the new Local/Student Chapter Outreach program is now posted along with the minutes from the INFORMEd meeting held at the Denver INFORMS meeting.  Traffic over the Fall semester was about as expected.
 

The site averaged around 185 hits for the months of August, September, October, November, and so far in early December.  Traffic picked up tremendously in later September and early October as the INFORMS conference drew near.  Please email me if you have any additions, corrections, and/or comments regarding the website.  See you at the IFORS meeting in Hawaii this July, John F. I. Minutes of the 2004 Business Meeting

 

The business meeting of INFORM-ED was held on Sunday evening, October 24, 2004 at the National INFORMS meeting in Denver. We had about 40 attendees. For a list of attendees and official minutes of the minutes, please visit our webpage at http://education.forum.informs.org/

 

II. Treasurer's Report

 

In September 2004, INFORM-ED had a balance of $2,407.43. $1010 in dues revenue has been received since January 2004. After membership renewals have been processed, an updated treasurer's report will be made.

2005 TEC Colloquium - Mary Beth Kurz

 

2005's Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium will address several aspects of defining and incorporating effective teaching techniques in any undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The colloquium will be beneficial to both seasoned and new faculty members at all levels and in all disciplines of OR. We plan to include sessions on topics such as Developing a Personal Philosophy of Effective Teaching, Teaching with Cases, and Teaching with Technology.

 

All Ph.D. granting programs in operations research, management science, and related fields will be invited to nominate faculty members as well as doctoral students preparing for academic careers to participate in TEC VII.

2005 Case Competition - Chris Zappe

 

Sixth Annual INFORMS Case Competition

INFORMS is pleased to announce its Sixth Annual Peer-Reviewed Case Competition. This competition is jointly sponsored by INFORMS Education Committee, INFORMS Case and Teaching Materials Initiative, and INFORM-ED. It is designed to encourage the creation, dissemination, and use of new, unpublished cases in operations research and the management sciences. All submissions and supporting documentation are due by August 19, 2005. All cases will be blind reviewed in August and September of 2005 by a panel of judges familiar with the case method.

 

Up to four finalists will be selected and notified by the judging committee by the beginning of October 2005. Finalists will give thirty-minute presentations of their entries at a special open session of the 2005 INFORMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA. The panel of judges will select the winning entry from these finalists based on these presentations. The winner will be announced at the INFORM-ED Business meeting at the 2005 INFORMS Conference. Finalists must present their cases at the Fall 2005 INFORMS Meeting in New Orleans to be eligible to win.

Guidelines for submitted cases are:

(1) No more than 10 pages (8.5" x 11.0") single-spaced (maximum of approx. 3000 words); shorter cases are acceptable.

(2) Exhibits are in addition to page limit.

(3) Teaching Notes of length as necessary to meet content expected.

(4) A 12-point proportional font (such as Times New Roman) with 1-inch margins.

(5) All submitted cases must be previously unpublished. Cases should be essentially new in their entirety. If the case contains material drafted originally by individuals or groups other than the author(s) submitting the case, then the intellectual history and ownership of these portions should be made absolutely clear. Contestants are responsible for assuring that this guideline is strictly met.

 

A complete submission package will consist of the following:

(1) Six hard copies and one electronic copy of a short (250 - 500 words) abstract, the case and teaching notes. The title should appear on the first page, but the name of the author and other indicators of authorship should be eliminated in the text of five copies to permit blind review. The abstract should appear by itself on the second page and identify the industry, business issues, technical issues, pedagogical objectives, and suggested uses of the case. The case, any exhibits, and then the teaching notes should follow.

(2) A completed Case Competition Submission Form (available on the web).

 

Prizes include:

(1) $500 and plaque to the best case

(2) $100 and plaque for up to three runners-up

The last you heard from me, I had just moved into the Business school, preparing to teach 250 undergraduates statistics. Last issue, my big concern was how to teach that many kids. This issue, just a little thought in a different direction - concern for students.

 

At the end of each class, I asked my students to drop me a quick note, giving me whatever feedback they wished - within the limits of good taste, of course. I promised them that I would read and, in a timely fashion, respond to these; this was generally done in an email to all students. Only the occasional feedback required a personal response.

 

At first, the students were reluctant to share, and considered the exercise a waste of paper. However, when they realized that their feedback could influence the course, they were very open to the possibilities. I won't go into detail on the nature of all the feedback - my point is simply that these students relished the opportunity to be heard!
