5) INFORMED OFFICER SLATE

The INFORM-ED By-Laws require the officers to nominate a slate of candidates before the Miami election. Based on input from several officers and other interested parties, I propose the following nominations. These candidates have a good mix of experience as well as new energy and ideas.

President............................James Cochran (formerly VP-Projects)

Treasurer/Secretary..................John Lawrence (incumbent)

Vice President -- Programs...........Janet Wagner (incumbent)

Vice President -- Projects...........Pinar Keskinocak

Vice President -- Publications.......Chris Zappe (Chair of Case Competition)

Vice President -- External Affairs...Ken Doerr (Chair of Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium)

The VP-Publications appoints and supports INFORM-ED's editors. The following

individuals have indicated their desire to serve in these important jobs:

Issues in Education Column in OR/MS Today....Robert Nydick

INFORM-ED Website............................John Kros (incumbent)

INFORM-ED Newsletter.........................Mike Racer (incumbent)

I emphasize that the officers will be elected at the Miami business meeting. Editors will be appointed by the VP-Publications. Other nominations may be offered as described in the By-laws, including from the floor. By-laws are here: http://www2.hpu.edu/jkros/bylaws.html

7) JUST A THOUGHT

Our university recently issued a request for proposals for Honors Program seminars. In a nutshell, these are one-hour courses in which the student can be exposed to a topic to which he/she might not otherwise be exposed. In looking at past offerings, I was appalled by the dearth of technical-related courses. Everything was liberal arts. Not even the business school got in the act. To fill the void, I volunteered to offer a seminar - basically "optimization for non-optimizers."

I suppose my point is this. We pride ourselves on our love for teaching, as well we should. And, while we're at it, we should realize that our audience extends beyond our own building on campus - K-12, non-engineers, other faculty members, etc. They all could benefit by knowing just a bit more about what we do.
