The INFORMS Journal on Computing (JOC) is a quarterly that publishes papers in the intersection of operations research (OR) and computer science (CS). Most papers contain original research, but we also welcome special papers in a variety of forms, including Feature Articles on timely topics, Expository Reviews making a comprehensive survey and evaluation of a subject area, and State-of-the-Art Reviews that collect and integrate recent streams of research. All papers are refereed.
We take a very broad view of what constitutes the "the intersection of OR and CS." Topics and formats include, but are not limited to:
- OR as applied to a CS problem. For example, queueing theory or simulation is used to help design a telecommunications system or a network of computers.
- CS as applied to an OR problem. For example, advanced data structures are used to improve an optimization or scheduling algorithm.
- results drawn from both OR and CS. For example, a new heuristic is used to accelerate a data-mining algorithm.
- results exploring uncharted areas with the potential of advancing OR or CS and which are in their intersection.
Visit the JOC section of INFORMS PubsOnLine for free open access to tables of contents, titles, and abstracts of all papers published in JOC from its inception in 1989 up to the present. Full texts of papers are available there to subscribers.
Please follow the links at the left for more specific information about JOC's diverse areas, the people who have volunteered their time and effort to make JOC a respected and useful outlet for OR/CS work, how to submit your work to JOC, forthcoming papers, back issues, our institutional sponsors, and how to subscribe.
JOC was originated in 1989 via the ORSA Computer Science Technical Section, and is still affiliated with that group's successor, the INFORMS Computing Society.
