INFORMS Section on Data Mining

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Section on Data Mining is to promote and disseminate research and applications among professionals interested in theory, methodologies, and applications in data mining and knowledge discovery.  As an interdisciplinary area that cuts across engineering and business research, in the fields of computer science, database management, information technology, statistics, computing, operations research, and operations management, Data Mining is inherently aligned with INFORMS objectives.  In particular, the Section on Data Mining will interact with many other INFORMS Sections/Societies, interweaving research from their areas to create new ideas for Data Mining.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES

Outside INFORMS:
  • ASA focuses in statistics methods and ASQ focuses in engineering and quality areas.
  • SIGKDD, which are dominated by computer scientists, focus on computer database management and computer algorithms.
Within INFORMS:
  • Section on Artificial Intelligence focusing on theory and applications on AI.
  • Society of Information Systems focusing on impact of information technology in organization.
  • Society of computing focusing on the computation aspect of algorithms rather than knowledge discovery
None of the existing societies have too much overlap with the proposed new DM Section.  The new Section will coordinate with these societies to co-sponsor conferences and activities in data mining.
