Three INFORMS Members Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

Amazon’s Russell Allgor, Northwestern University’s Hani Mahmassani, and the University of Southern California’s Jong-Shi Pang are among More than 100 Newly Elected 2021 National Academy of Engineering Members

CATONSVILLE, MD, February 10, 2021 – Three INFORMS members –Russell Allgor, chief scientist at Amazon, Hani Mahmassani, William A. Patterson Distinguished Chair in Transportation at Northwestern University, and Jong-Shi Pang, Epstein Family Chair of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California – have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. They join more than 100 new members recently elected.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

Allgor is recognized for his application of operations engineering to design and improve logistics and fulfillment systems for e-commerce. Mahmassani is known for his modeling of intelligent transportation networks and interdisciplinary collaboration in transportation engineering. Pang is being recognized for the development of methods to advance the theory and applications of optimization and operations research.

Election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process. The newly elected class will be formally inducted at the NAE’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on October 3, 2021.
