Congratulations to the winners of major INFORMS practice prizes that were awarded recently at the 2014 INFORMS Analytics Conference in Boston, MA.
The Franz Edelman Award. The winner of this most challenging competition and the most prestigious INFORMS award was the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who collaborated with Kid Risk, Inc. to use analytics and O.R. to help eradicate pockets of polio still in existence around the world.
The INFORMS Prize. Mayo Clinic was awarded this prestigious prize that rewards effective integration of analytics and O.R. throughout the organization. Mayo Clinic uses analytics and O.R. throughout its organization to provide economical, quality services in an era of booming medical costs.
UPS George D. Smith Prize. MIT Leaders for Global Operations won this prestigious award for excellence in preparing students to become effective practitioners of analytics, O.R., and management science.
The Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Operations Research Practice.This award, previously announced at the 2013 INFORMS Annual Meeting, was officially presented to the team working with Yedioth Group in Israel to optimize supply and demand.
Gary Lilien ISMS-MSI Practice Prize. Martin Natter and Ju-Young Kim, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany and Ana-Marija Ozimec, ENTEGA GmbH & Co. KG, Germany, shared the ISMS award for "ECO: Entega's Profitable New Customer Acquisition on Online Price Comparison Sites."
Innovative Applications in Analytics Award. The INFORMS Analytics Section presented this award to recognize creative and unique developments, applications, or combinations of analytics techniques. The goal of this award is to promote the awareness of the value of analytics in unusual applications or in creative combination to provide unique insights and/or business value. The 2014 winner is "A SMS Text Classification System for UNICEF Uganda," by Prem Melville, Vijil Chenthamarakshan, Rick Lawrence, and Solomon Assefa, Machine Learning Group, IBM Research; James Powell and Sharad Sapra, UNICEF Uganda; and Rajesh Anandan, US Fund for UNICEF.
Spreadsheet Guru Competition. The Analytics Section sponsored this fast-paced competition in spreadsheet skills. Contestants received four rounds of problem statements, with solutions judged on the basis of clarity and solving speed. Lianna Gerrish was crowned the 2014 "Spreadsheet Guru."

The INFORMS board of directors, staff, and membership extend condolences to the family of David Kevin George, a recent PhD graduate of The Ohio State University who died at age 34 on February 20. A memorial to him can be found here.

The United States Military Academy at West Point provides an opportunity for undergraduates to present their research at the academy. The conference features research projects that apply a comprehensive set of skills and concepts to real-world problems or contemporary research areas. Students will present their research project results to an audience comprising students, professors, and participating organizations, as well as judges assigned to determine the best presentations. Winning individuals and teams come from a wide diversity of problem domains and across many academic institutions, so all are highly encouraged to participate. Additionally, the conference presentations will be published as conference proceedings by the Defense Technical Information Center.The conference will feature the following tracks: Decision Analysis, Process Modeling and Analysis, Modeling and Simulation, Project Management, Systems Design, Systems Design for Defense Applications, Modeling and Simulation for Defense Applications, Problem Solving in Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, and Lean Systems.
