WINFORMS is a professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of operations research and the management sciences in the greater Washington DC area. WINFORMS, with over 150 individual members, is one of the largest geographic sections of INFORMS. WINFORMS holds joint meetings with many other organizations, such as the Institute for Industrial Engineering National Capital Chapter, the National Economists Club, and the Washington Statistical Society.

Please join us in congratulating the winners of the 2016 WINFORMS Student Excellence Award. On April 19th, each competition finalist presented his or her work to a WINFORMS audience for evaluation. The judges assessed each of these presentations based on technical merit, originality, impact of research, and clarity of the presentation. The final ranking is:
- 1st Prize: Ali Asadabadi, University of Maryland, “Optimal Transportation and Shoreline Infrastructure Investment Planning under a Stochastic Climate Future”
- 2nd Prize: Rui Zhang, University of Maryland, “Mathematical Programming Approaches to Influence Maximization on Social Networks”
- 3rd Prize: Catherine King, College of William and Mary, “Data Analysis and Simulation: Optimizing Voter Wait Times”
These winners will each receive cash prizes.
