Murat Köksalan, professor of Industrial Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, Jyrki Wallenius, dean of the School of Economics, Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland, and Stanley Zionts, distinguished professor emeritus, School of Management, State University of New York at Buffalo recently published a book titled, “Multiple Criteria Decision Making: From Early History to the 21st Century.” The book, published by the World Scientific Publishing, Singapore, details the developments of the multiple criteria decision making (one of the most important and fastest growing subfields of operations research and management science) and related fields, and includes descriptions of relevant work, the different branches of the field and brief biographies of major contributors to the field, including interesting personal aspects of the contributors’ lives.

Among the contributors to the field that are included in the volume are Abraham Charnes, William W. Cooper, Ward Edwards, Peter Fishburn, Arthur Geoffrion, Ralph Keeney, Oleg Larichev, Howard Raiffa, Bernard Roy, Thomas Saaty, Stanley Zionts and many others.

Saul Gass and Arjang Assad signed copies of their new book, “Profiles in Operations Research: Pioneers and Innovators,” at a book-signing reception held during the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Charlotte, N.C. The book’s publisher, Springer, hosted the event.

Through profiles of 43 “pioneers and innovators,” the book recounts the development of the field of operations research and traces the development of O.R. from its military origins to a mature discipline that is recognized worldwide for its contributions to managerial planning and complex global operations. Those profiled include such luminaries as Philip McCord Morse, John von Neumann, George Kimball, C. West Churchman, William Cooper, George Dantzig, Russ Ackoff, John D.C. Little, Ralph Gomory, Al Blumstein and many more.
