Bonder Scholarship -- Application Process

The Military Applications Society (MAS) of INFORMS is seeking nominations for the 2016 Bonder Scholarship for applied operations research in military applications.

The purpose of this scholarship for applied operations research in military applications is to promote the development and application of process modeling and operations research analysis to military issues. The scholarship provides funding to support the development of highly qualified individuals and promote the interchange of military OR research knowledge in conjunction with INFORMS.

The Bonder Scholarship consists of a grant of $4,000 (USD) that is intended to provide financial support for a promising young doctoral researcher. In addition, the award winner will be eligible for up to $1,000 (USD) of travel funding to support their participation in MAS presentation sessions and activities at the INFORMS annual meeting. INFORMS will waive registration fees for awardees. An additional $2,000 ($US) grant is provided and funded by the Seth Bonder Foundation. INFORMS will waive registration fees for awardees. The tenure of the award is one year.

Students pursuing doctoral studies in military operations research or a related discipline are eligible, particularly those with two to three years remaining in their programs. Applications from US and international students are welcome.

Candidates should submit the following materials electronically:

  • a curriculum vita
  • two letters of support (note: In a few cases, when it is needed in order to fully represent the academic and practical strengths of an application, a third letter may be appropriate.)
  • a brief statement describing why they are interested in applying operations research to military issues
  • a two-page summary of their proposed program of research

Selection Criteria:

  • The scholarship will be granted on the basis of excellence, innovation, preparation, and probability of candidate's success.
  • Candidates will be evaluated on the quality of their preparation to undertake a program of applied operations research in the military arena.
  • The proposed program of research will be judged according to its potential for making a significant contribution to the field of applied OR in military operations, as well as the likelihood of successful completion.
