TIMS President, 1973-74
Harvey M. Wagner was the 20th President of TIMS. He was a Professor of Operations, Technology and Innovation Management at the Kenan-Flagler Business School of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was a Professor at Yale University (1967-1976) and at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University (1957-1967).
Prof. Wagner was perhaps best known for his book Principles of Operations Research (Prentice Hall 1969) which has been the introduction to the field for thousands of students. The book was awarded the 1969 Lanchester Prize by ORSA. He also received the Edelman Award in 1984, and the Informs Expository Writing Award in 1996. In all Prof. Wagner has published five books and 60 refereed articles on operations research. His paper with T.M. Whitin on dynamic economic lot size in Management Science was listed in 2004 as one of the Ten Most Influential Papers.
Prof. Wagner was selected as a Fellow of INFORMS in 2002. In 2006, he was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Manufacturing and Service Operations Society of INFORMS (MSOM) for his outstanding research and scholarship.
As President Elect of TIMS in 1972 he was active in combining the annual meetings of the Operations Research Society and The Institute of Management Science That meeting was held in Atlantic City. As a result, the two societies held two joint annual meetings annually until the formation of INFORMS. It was the first step to unifying the two societies.
His areas of expertise included operations management, production planning, and supply-chain management.
