OR/MS Tomorrow is the online student membership magazine for INFORMS.

The bi-annual publication provides a look at operations research and management science from the perspective of young people in those fields. Edited by a team of students and junior faculty, the magazine is written for students and aims to introduce topics relevant to them, highlight their accomplishments, and promote awareness of current events and issues in OR and MS.

Simulation models are used to address “what if” questions and to find the optimal decision under uncertain and risky situations. Some models can be solved analytically, but they often require very specific assumptions that do not always hold in practice (e.g., Poisson arrivals, exponentially distributed service times, and steady-state stationary behavior). Simulation is an approach that can be used to evaluate a wide variety of complex engineering systems and business processes such as call centers, supply chains, hospital emergency rooms, air traffic control systems, power systems, and transportation networks. For complex systems with stochastic behavior, simulation may be the only feasible quantitative tool to model and study the design and operations.
