Several Republicans have already thrown their hat into the ring to garner the GOP nomination for the presidency. The tumultuous Republican primaries during the 2016 campaign were fueled by the large number of candidates and the “styles” that they employed, such as the inordinate use of social media, like Twitter, to promulgate their messages. The 2024 campaign leading up to Election Day could be even more chaotic, given the growth of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and how it may impact campaign information.

Earlier this year, New York Times columnist Kevin Roose conducted a two-hour conversation with Microsoft’s popular new chatbot, “Bing Chat.” Although the “conversation” started innocently enough, before it was over, the chatbot would declare its affection for Roose, telling him, “You’re not happily married, because you’re not happy. You’re not happy, because you’re not in love. You’re not in love, because you’re not with me.”

That is what top industry leaders are frantically sounding the alarm about. These technologists and academics keep smashing the red panic button, doing everything they can to warn about the potential dangers artificial intelligence poses to the very existence of civilization.
