What You’ll Learn – A Overview of the Class

Leading in Analytics is a self-paced program focused on the crucial aspects of achieving success in analytics and AI projects.

Built upon Five Manageable Tasks (Problem, Team, Data, Tools, and Execution), it adds two additional critical elements: Maturity and Responsible Analytics.

The course emphasizes the importance of Leadership, stressing that the true value of analytics lies in deriving Action to achieve Business Value.

The Eight Modules of LiA:

The Why Of Analytics Leadership

  • Given their track record of failing to produce expected value as much as 89% of the time, AI and Analytics stand at the precipice of disruption. The root cause of these frequent failures can be traced to insufficient leadership. The good news is Leading in Analytics can help us do something about it.

The Business Problem

  • A well-constructed problem statement is crucial for achieving success. We highly recommend the INFORMS Business Problem Framing course along with Leading in Analytics to sharpen your skills in this area. While BPF teaches the mechanics of constructing a problem statement, LiA delves into the leadership skills required to establish a scalable method for identifying potential problems, evaluating their viability, and prioritizing them to prevent overreach and mistakes.

The Analytics Team

  • The construction of a strong and talented team is essential. In this program, you will investigate the roles and functions of team members within the organizational framework, with a particular focus on directives for executives and business process owners who work with or oversee analytics teams. Along the way, we will introduce the concepts of a Minimal Viable Team and Analytics Translators.

The Data Of Analytics

  • Data is often called the new oil, and there's little doubt in its truth. However, many organizations struggle to understand the true value of their data. In this program you will explore methods for assigning value to data and strategies for protecting that value. Additionally, we provide strategies specifically for Business Leaders, who frequently control data assets. As a bonus, we will address the simplest, yet potentially most impactful, concept in the program. Hint: it is titled Doheney’s Axiom.

The Tools Of Analytics

  • Due to the constantly evolving nature of specific tools, they are not covered in this program. Rather, following a review of the Analytics Process to establish a general understanding of tooling, we adopt a comprehensive perspective on both data and analytics tools employed within the process. The Five V’s Framework is introduced, and the significance of mindset in relation to data and tools is explored.

Execution of Analytics Projects

  • Here, we explore the Minimal Viable Team in greater detail, including a discussion of the potential negative consequences of overlooking this vital component. This section also covers the importance of acting, common obstacles to success, and the Dozen Daggers of Danger.

Analytics Maturity

  • Analytics Maturity represents the long-term objective for many organizations. This is the developmental process of moving from singular analytics projects, through the adoption of AI and more sophisticated analytical methods, establishing a structured and systemized framework for data-driven decision-making. This section is dedicated to examining this process, highlighting the potential challenges and advantages encountered throughout.

Responsible Analytics

  • In this final section, we start by examining the role of the Informed Skeptic, the mastery of which is desired by most analytics and AI professionals. Next, we address the concept of not just performing good analytics but using analytics for good. We then explore INFORMS’ Foundations of Data Ethics, since ethical practice is central to everything we do. Finally, we will conclude the program by going Beyond Do No Harm.
