David B. Montgomery is a marketing researcher who has made significant contributions to marketing strategy and global management. Montgomery received all four of his degrees from Stanford University: a BS in electrical engineering, an MS in mathematical statistics, and an MBA and PhD in management science. Prior to receiving his PhD, Montgomery accepted a position at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During that period, he visited the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta and was a Senior Research Associate of the Marketing Science Institute at Harvard. Montgomery returned to the Graduate School of Business of his alma mater in 1970 where he has since remained.

Montgomery has published a series of influential texts on management science in marketing. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he worked with MIT professor Glen L. Urban, co-authoring Management Science in Marketing (1969) and Applications of Management Science in Marketing (1970). Montgomery has gone on to author, co-author, and co-edit nine more books and technical reports on a variety of subjects. From outlining stochastic models of buying behavior to offering solutions to balancing cooperation and competition in the Pacific Rim, his work has dealt with pertinent business problems.  In the mid-1970s, he published a two volume piece on cases in computer and model assisted marketing.

Montgomery has received a many honors for his dedicated career as a marketing scientist. In 2002, the American Marketing Association presented him with the Vijay Mahajan award for his sustained contributions to marketing strategy literature spanning over three decades. Eight years later, Montgomery was named an inaugural Fellow of the Society for Marketing Science of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). He was elected an INFORMS Fellow in 2009.
