We are drowning in numbers, and we no longer understand what they mean. Every day, headlines bombard us with figures meant to inform: billions in spending, trillions in debt, percentages signaling growth or decline. But for most of us, these numbers blur together. They register as “large” or “small,” but almost never as real. And that is more than a math problem. It is a civic one.

New App Will Send Wisconsinites Alert If In Close Contact With Positive COVID Case

New App Will Send Wisconsinites Alert If In Close Contact With Positive COVID Case

CBS 58, December 19, 2020

A new contact tracing mobile app called "WI Exposure Notification" is set to launch next week, giving Wisconsinites another tool to stop the spread of COVID-19. Gov. Tony Evers announced the app will go live Wednesday, Dec. 23. “We’re excited about this app’s potential to enhance our state’s response to COVID-19,” said Gov. Evers. “The voluntary WI Exposure Notification app is another tool in our toolbox to stop the spread. Because it lets you know faster if you’ve been in close contact with someone who’s tested positive, you can take steps to keep yourself safe and protect those around you. Also, the app doesn’t collect or use device location, so users will remain anonymous.”

Experts Say Efficacy of Smartphone COVID-19 Tracing App Will Depend on Participation

Fox 47, December 17, 2020

While the vaccine may be months away for many in the country, there’s another tool on its way that can go in the hands of everyone in Wisconsin as soon as next week. The State announced the WI Exposure Notification, a voluntary and free smartphone app that uses Bluetooth to alert users if they’ve been in close contact with another user who has tested positive for COVID-19. Whenever someone tests positive for COVID-19, they’ll be sent a code that can be entered into the app, which is used to anonymously send an alert to users with whom they’ve shared a Bluetooth signal.

TSA Has Sped Up Airport Tech Deployments Since COVID

TSA Has Sped Up Airport Tech Deployments Since COVID

Travel Weekly, December 18, 2020

The TSA has sped up technology deployments since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic as it moves to reduce literal touch points at airport screening stations. The effort has been undertaken to benefit the traveling public but also TSA staffers themselves. As of Dec. 15, 11 TSA agents have died of Covid-19. The technology deployments have centered around 3-D screening systems and automated ID authentication. The former diminishes the likelihood that passenger carry-on bags will have to be manually checked, the agency said, which in turn reduces interactions between agents and flyers.
