Amazon Senior Research Scientist, Cristiana Lara, Honored with 2024 INFORMS Early Career Practitioner Award

BALTIMORE, MD, April 15, 2024 – INFORMS, the largest association for the decision and data sciences, has awarded the inaugural INFORMS Early Career Practitioner Award to Cristiana Lara, a senior research scientist with Amazon. She is being recognized for her exceptional contributions to business/industry, government and consulting, and service to the operations research and analytics profession.

The award was announced at the INFORMS Analytics Conference in Orlando, Florida, during the Edelman Gala.

Lara grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she attended Federal University. She received her Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and began working at Amazon in 2019. Lara was part of the team that helped formulate how to efficiently transport packages through the middle-mile network. She was also influential in the development of Amazon’s “Regionalization” Initiative. This initiative modifies U.S. network design and execution software systems to drive down costs and improve delivery speed by dividing areas into smaller regions. Lara also leads a team of other research scientists who develop models and algorithms for network design, line haul scheduling and inventory placement.

The INFORMS Early Career Practitioner Award was created to engage and recognize early career professionals in the field of operations research. INFORMS acknowledges the unique needs of practitioners and has worked to prioritize resources to aid in their professional growth throughout their careers. This award seeks to acknowledge individuals who have made significant contributions within the initial five years of their post-graduation employment, and currently working outside of academia.
