INFORMS Announces General Motors As Title Sponsor of the 2019 O.R. & Analytics Student Team Competition

CATONSVILLE, MD, May 15, 2018 – INFORMS, the leading international association for operations research and analytics professionals, announced that General Motors will be the title sponsor of its 2019 Operations Research and Analytics Student Team Competition, to be held on April 14-16, 2019 in Austin, Texas. The competition provides students the opportunity to solve the kinds of real-world workplace challenges they will face during their careers.

Students are challenged to apply their considerable talent to develop solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing our world today. As the title sponsor, GM will be able to leverage the competition by having students solve a complex business challenge, using identical data sets and a choice between several complimentary software options.

A panel of judges comprised of industry experts and academic leaders will review each teams’ written submission, evaluating their analytics process, including problem framing, methodology selection, data use, model building and quantitative analysis. The 2019 challenge will be announced later this year.

“As an organization that has benefited from the implementation of a strong O.R. and analytics program, General Motors is thrilled for the opportunity to support the next generation of O.R. and analytics professionals, and better prepare them for future careers by challenging them to solve a difficult problem we face in our industry,” said Jonathan Owen, CAP, director of operations research at General Motors Research and Development.

General Motors employs hundreds of O.R. and analytics practitioners worldwide who play a vital role in everything from designing, building, selling, and servicing vehicles to purchasing, logistics, and quality. The team is constantly developing new business models and vetting emerging opportunities. In addition, the company was previously presented with the INFORMS Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Advanced Analytics, Operations Research, and Management Science, as well as the INFORMS Prize for Operations Research, in recognition of their innovative and enduring integration of O.R. and analytics programs into their organization.

“We are excited to welcome General Motors as the Title Sponsor for next year’s Student Team Competition,” said Melissa Moore, executive director, INFORMS. “GM has been recognized for integrating O.R. and analytics innovation into nearly every aspect of the company. We know they will provide the students with a challenging industry problem that will require them to work as a team to solve and present their results.”

The third annual competition will be held at the 2019 INFORMS Business Analytics Conference at which time the winning team will be announced.
