Two INFORMS Members Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

IBM’s Stephan Biller, Northwestern University’s Jorge Nocedal Among More than 100 Newly Elected 2020 National Academy of Engineering Members

CATONSVILLE, MD, February 10, 2020 – Two INFORMS members – Stephan Biller, vice president Offering Management Watson IoT and Chief Innovation Officer for IBM and Jorge Nocedal, Walter P. Murphy professor at Northwestern University – have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. They join more than 100 new members also recently elected.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

Biller is being honored for his leadership and advancement of manufacturing technologies and innovations based on the Internet of Things and digital data. Nocedal earned the distinction for contributions to the theory, design, and implementation of optimization algorithms and machine learning software.

Election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process. Biller and Nocedal and the rest of the newly elected class will be formally inducted at the NAE’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on October 4, 2020.
