Two INFORMS Members Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

Columbia University’s Donald Goldfarb and MIT’s David Simchi-Levi are Among More than 100 Newly Elected 2023 National Academy of Engineering Members

BALTIMORE, MD, February 13, 2023 – Two INFORMS members have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Donald Goldfarb is an Alexander and Hermine Avanessians Professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University and David Simchi-Levi is a Professor of Engineering Systems and core faculty in the Institute of Data, Systems and Society at Massachusetts Institute for Technology.

Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”

Goldfarb is recognized for the development of widely used algorithms and methodologies for linear, quadratic and nonlinear optimization. Simchi-Levi is recognized for his contributions using optimization and stochastic modeling to enhance supply chain management and operations.

Election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process. The newly elected class will be formally inducted at NAE’s Annual Meeting on October 1, 2023.
