The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS^®) today announced the award of the INFORMS Decision Analysis Society Frank P. Ramsey Medal to Dr. Don N. Kleinmuntz, President and co-founder of Strata Decision Technology, a market leading provider of web-based financial analytics and performance management software tools used primarily by U.S. hospitals and health systems to enhance their financial planning, budgeting, and reporting processes.

A special program for Charlotte-area high school math teachers is the latest contribution in a national initiative to improve applied math that has seen North Carolina universities and school systems take the lead in making America more competitive in math and science.

With hepatitis B infecting as many as 10% of people of Asian descent, operations researchers collaborated with a liver transplant surgeon to develop mathematical models that verified the cost effectiveness of hepatitis B interventions. These interventions now successfully screen, treat, and vaccinate millions of Asian and Pacific Islander adults in the U.S. and millions of children in China, according to a paper in a journal of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS^®).

In the wake of the devastating Japanese tsunami, the 2010 Haitian earthquake, and the recent threat of pandemic flu, a new issue of the journal Interfaces: The INFORMS Journal on the Practice of Operations Research is dedicated to improving responses to disasters, health crises, and acute public issues, according to the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS^®).
