Vision Statement
First, I thank the nominating committee for the opportunity to stand for election to Treasurer of INFORMS, and for the excellent slate of candidates the committee has identified for all the Board positions.
The work of INFORMS members – saving lives, saving money, solving problems – is inspiring to me. INFORMS is comprised of practitioners and academics who collaboratively develop, implement, and apply theory and methodology that makes a visible, positive impact on the world. The organization serves to enhance that impact with the professional connections it provides through subdivisions and committees, the knowledge it disseminates through conferences and journals, and the advocacy it conducts with local, state, and federal government. Being a member of INFORMS continues to enrich my professional life in new ways with each passing year.
I am interested in serving as treasurer because I see the opportunity in this role to enhance Board-level decision-making. When I served as VP for Membership and Professional Recognition from 2016-2019, I had the privilege of helping shepherd INFORMS into exciting initiatives pertaining to scholarships, diversity, advocacy, AI, and new journals. Initiatives like these propel the profession forward in pursuit of its strategic vision. The treasurer serves the important role of providing relevant information in a timely fashion that will allow Board members to consider the collective impacts and fiduciary trade-offs that such opportunities present.
In addition to guiding budgeting and investment decision-making, the treasurer also serves on the Executive Committee of INFORMS. Through this committee, the treasurer can examine policies and initiatives through a macroscopic lens and speak on behalf of all members of INFORMS. In my previous work liaising with the INFORMS Membership department, serving as an officer for WORMS and INFORM-ED, and chairing the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, I have gained a strong understanding of INFORMS’ strengths but also of areas where the organization can improve its service to its members. On the Executive Committee, I will be an advocate for all INFORMS members.
My service to INFORMS includes leadership experiences on the Board, INFORMS-level committees, and within subdivisions. As INFORMS VP of Membership and Professional Recognition, I worked collaboratively to make INFORMS award processes consistent, sustainable, and inclusive. These efforts culminated in improvements to the selection processes of INFORMS Fellows and the Edelman Award, among others. I worked with the Member Services department to enhance member benefits, by revitalizing the Student Affairs Committee and the INFORMS Speakers Program, and co-shepherding (with Jill Wilson) the creation of a scholarship program. As chair of the INFORMS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee in 2020-2021, I used my understanding of INFORMS governance to help operationalize aspirations articulated by the committee and other groups such as the Minority Issues Forum (MIF) and the Forum on Women in OR/MS (WORMS). The committee launched the DEI Ambassadors Program (an initiative of Pinar Keskinocak), collaborated with organizing committees to bring DEI keynote speakers to the Annual Meeting, and liaised with several departments of INFORMS to discuss and develop inclusive practices. As a current member of the committee, I am collaborating on several projects to enhance inclusive and equitable pedagogical practices and to develop a corpus of teaching materials that integrate matters of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice into the OR/MS problem-solving process. I am also currently on the INFORMS Finance Committee, and an ad hoc Board committee on committee diversity.
I love our profession and I love INFORMS. I would welcome the opportunity to continue to serve INFORMS and its members as its next treasurer.
