INFORMS Analytics Conference

The Institute for Operations Research & Management Sciences (INFORMS) is hosting an Analytics Conference in Orlando in April 2016. The event is expected to bring in more than 1,000 business professionals and owners — many who specialize in analytics. Big names in business are expected to make an appearance, too. Ford's Chief Analytics Officer Paul Ballew and Uber's lead Director of Operations Research Samuel Elderesveld will both speak at the event, along with plenty of others who have helped the U.S. Army, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, BNY Mellon, NYPD and UPS. In addition to the speakers, there will be dozens of workshops, consultations and networking opportunities. In total, there will be more that 120 events for attendees to schedule.

Revolutionizing promotional pricing

Georgia Perakis, INFORMS member and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, led a team of Ph.D. students, in partnership with Oracle, to develop a model approach to determining optimal promotional retail pricing. Compared to current methods, the newly developed model was able to identify the potential for between 3-10% improvement in profits.

CATONSVILLE, MD, August 1, 2016 – How well does the emotional and instantaneous content in tweets perform relative to the more deliberate searches recorded in Google Trends in forecasting future TV ratings? In a massive big data analysis using data from Twitter, Google Trends and other widely used websites for entertainment information, a forthcoming article in the INFORMS journal Marketing Science finds that mining Twitter content is significantly more effective than Google Trends in its ability to predict future TV ratings.
