Stephen M. Robinson, Professor Emeritus and National Academy of Engineering Section Chair, is 2014 INFORMS President

CATONSVILLE, MD, January 14, 2014 – The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS®) today announced that Professor Emeritus Stephen M. Robinson of the University of Wisconsin Madison is President of the association’s 2014 Board of Directors, which includes key analytics leaders from academia and business.

Prof. Robinson will continue to grow the professional society’s new programs in analytics, which have come to include the Certified Analytics Professional Program (CAP®) and a growing continuing education program. An analytics maturity model is expected to debut this spring.

Prof. Robinson, who previously served as editor-in-chief of the INFORMS journal Mathematics of Operations Research and INFORMS predecessor organizations’ head of publications, has reaffirmed his commitment to growing the association’s well-ranked suite of 13 specialized journals and introducing new scholarly journals.

Prof. Robinson comes to the INFORMS presidency with a distinguished record in academia and government, as well as at INFORMS. A (Ret.) Colonel in the US Army, he served for 35 years at the University of Wisconsin, where he specialized in optimization and variational research. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and chair of the Academy’s Section on Industrial, Manufacturing & Operational Systems Engineering. On the Academy, he has served on committees that advise the Executive Branch, for example in 2012 sitting on a committee that issued a report warning the Department of Defense about a shortage of quality STEM workers.

He is author, co-author or editor of seven books and more than 100 scientific research papers. He holds an honorary doctor’s degree from the University of Zürich. He is a member of the National Associate of the National Research Council. Prof. Robinson was named an INFORMS Fellow and received INFORMS’ George E. Kimball Medal for distinguished service.
