UPS George D. Smith Prize: Winner(s)
Citation:

The H. John Heinz III College of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University embodies the  true spirit of the UPS George D. Smith Prize in its distinctive approach to educating students to understand real-world problems, design solutions, make decisions and evaluate impact.   The unique curriculum seamless blends analytics, technology and deployment skills to create an environment where students are prepared to practice operations research on the challenging issues of our time, working with uncertain information and negotiated outcomes.  Since its founding in 1968 “to educate men and women for intelligent action,” more than 11,000 students have graduated from the College of Information Systems and Public Policy.  The outstanding accomplishments of the alumni and the ranks of eager external partners, spanning all sectors of the economy, are a testimony to the programs’ sustained effectiveness.

By awarding the 2016 UPS George D. Smith Prize to the H. John Heinz III College of Information Systems and Public Policy, INFORMS salutes the Carnegie Mellon University program and its graduates for their outstanding contributions to the society by practicing operations research.
