Unmasking Human Trafficking: New AI Research Reveals Hidden Recruitment Networks

BALTIMORE, MD, May 24, 2025 – Most anti-human trafficking efforts focus on breaking up sex sales; however, new research in the INFORMS journal Manufacturing & Service Operations Management is turning its attention to where trafficking truly begins – recruitment. Using machine learning to analyze millions of online ads, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have uncovered patterns that link deceptive job offers to sex trafficking networks. By mapping the connections between recruitment and sales locations, the study reveals a hidden supply chain – one that can now be exposed and interrupted earlier in the trafficking process.

United Parcel Service Inc on Tuesday said it is rolling out a new navigation tool designed to reduce costs for the company and headaches for its roughly 60,000 U.S. package delivery drivers. The world's biggest package delivery firm - known for eliminating most left turns on routes as part of a years-long effort to cut driver miles, fuel use and accident risks - expects to have the new UPSNav technology in most of its U.S. drivers' hands by 2020. UPS is also a recipient of the INFORMS Franz Edelman Award.

In 2012, consumers paid $32 billion in overdraft fees, which represented the single largest source of revenue for banks from demand deposit accounts, while leading to significant levels of consumer dissatisfaction and attracting attention from government regulators. In a recent study in the INFORMS journal Marketing Science, researchers have found that it may be possible to help correct this problem through the application of sophisticated data analytics.

INFORMS, the leading association for operations research (O.R.) and analytics professionals, has awarded the 2018 INFORMS Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Practice of Advanced Analytics and Operations Research to researchers from Cornell University for their work to increase the efficiency of bike-sharing programs. The award was presented at the 2018 INFORMS Annual Meeting held in Phoenix, AZ on November 4-7.
