In the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections, the political parties in many states are working to redefine their congressional district maps to gain every possible edge. From California and Texas to Tennessee and Virginia, redistricting efforts have taken center stage. The Supreme Court has sanctioned partisan gerrymandering, and the system has evolved to one in which state legislature majorities get to determine who is most likely to fill those seats in Congress.

Fake Hermès Birkin bags and other counterfeit luxury goods are popular not only with people on a budget, but also with those with deeper pockets, a new study suggests.

Researchers from the National University of Singapore analyzed millions of counterfeit purchases by American consumers from more than 24,000 U.S. zip codes on a major cross-border, e-commerce platform. They found that both lower- and higher-income individuals are “significantly more likely” to buy fake luxury items than middle-income consumers, according to a press release by INFORMS on Monday.

New study finds Airbnb cannibalizes the hotel business while bolstering demand

It comes as no surprise that Airbnb steals business from hotels, but a new research paper published last month argued that the home-sharing platform also drives demand in a way that helps traditional hotels, especially during peak travel season. Professors from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon published a study last month in research journal Marketing Science that analyzed how Airbnb interacts with the hotel markets, and the conclusions were somewhat unexpected.

INFORMS member Arden Baxter has been awarded a Graduate Research Fellowships (GRF) by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Baxter, a PhD student with Georgia Tech's H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE) received one of only four grants given by the NSF in the industrial engineering/operations research category. Baxter, who has a bachelor’s degree from Rollins College in math and computer science, is advised by William W. George Chair and Professor Pinar Keskinocak, who also directs the Center for Health and Humanitarian Systems, and is an INFORMS Fellow and the INFORMS President-Elect.
