In the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections, the political parties in many states are working to redefine their congressional district maps to gain every possible edge. From California and Texas to Tennessee and Virginia, redistricting efforts have taken center stage. The Supreme Court has sanctioned partisan gerrymandering, and the system has evolved to one in which state legislature majorities get to determine who is most likely to fill those seats in Congress.

In short, gerrymandering has become a central feature of the system, not a bug. But what if we rethink the structure entirely?

For years, remote work has been viewed as one of the most important drivers of employee satisfaction. New research suggests that assumption may be giving remote work too much credit.

A study published in the INFORMS journal Management Science found that while remote employees often report higher job satisfaction, much of that advantage disappears when researchers account for factors such as workplace culture, trust in management, communication and opportunities for professional development.

Cannabis legalisation ‘reduces binge drinking’

Citing research from investment firm Cowen & Co, research company Grand View Research and a consumer poll, the report found that binge drinking in US states that legalised the drug has dropped 9% below the national average. Excessive drinking in states with a legal cannabis market is also 11% lower than states where cannabis remains illegal.

The United States government is tightening security by providing a higher level of identification validation. This isn’t new -- the REAL ID Act passed in 2005 -- but it’s taking effect next year. It was passed in an effort are to make it more difficult to counterfeit peoples’ identity and personal information using their identification cards (IDs) like state driver’s licenses. The problem is, how much good will it do if people who need to update their IDs to this higher security format don’t know they need to do so?

INFORMS, the largest international association of operations research (O.R.) and analytics professionals and students, has officially named 12 outstanding members as Fellows, one of the highest honors in the O.R. profession. The 2019 INFORMS Fellows will be inducted in Seattle, Washington, October 20–23, during the INFORMS Annual Meeting. INFORMS Fellows are honored for their outstanding lifetime accomplishments and contributions in operations research and analytics.
